Wilhelm Otto Daniel Martin Neitz, South African veterinarian and protozoologist (Potgeietersus, today Mokopane 17 November 1906 – Pretoria 18 August 1979)



Authored over 133 scientific publications

With G. de Kock, R.M. Du Toit & C.J. Van Heerden described Tzaneen disease (1937)

With R.M. du Toit identified the plurality of strains of the bluetongue virus (1948)

Discovered the enigmatic disease of calves known as sweating sickness is caused by bite of Hyalomma truncatum (1954)  

Identified and described Theileria parva lawrencei as causative agent of Corridor disease (1955)

Named Corridor disease (1956)

Discovered the chemotherapeutic cure for ruminant heartwater employing sulphonamides being the first use of this drug against rickettsial infections of animals and humans (1930s)

Developed method of immunization against heartwater

With R.A. Alexander developed a heartwater blood vaccine  

Discovered that development of macroschizonts of Theileria parva parva is suppressed by tetracyclines
