Wilmar Dias da Silva

Wilmar Dias da Silva, Brazilian immunologist (Barbacena, Minas Gerais State 12 October 1930 –

With I. Mota demonstrated that in low concentration of anti-histamine substances inhibit their release by mast cells and in high concentration occur the inverse (1960)

With I. Mota First to show anaphylactic antibodies fixed to mast cells (1960)

With I. Mota Showed that anaphylactic antibodies perform reactions only after binding to surface receptors on mast cells

With O. Bier, I. Mota & N. Vaz, authored Imunologia Básica e Aplicada (Fundamentals of Immunology), translated into English and German (1973)

Proposed that anaphylatoxins rise from interactions between mast cells-polysaccharides-glycoproteins and complement system

With I. Lepow discovered, isolated and purified anaphylatoxin C3a and identified its role (1967)

With colleagues contributed to definite characterization of complement system like a main biological system and not a secondary reagent

With colleagues identified complement system as key element in infection control by Schistosoma mansoni

Demonstrated that Ig Y antibodies are potentially an efficient and low cost reagent for inclusion in immunodiagnostic kits
